This is the 1997 deluxe White Wolf hardcover edition of 2 of Ellison's late '60s collections. Originally intended to republish all of his works in "authorized" editions they stalled after this one due to unclear conflicts between the editors and Ellison and they only got 4 books out, mostly focusing on Ellison's '70s oeuvre. That said these are nice editions and worthy of your HE bookshelf. "Beast" is a good sampling of his late '60s, post-"Repent" and "I Have No Mouth" period. Nothing I found to be remarkable in this collection but "Beast" was an award winner and Ellison was at the time moving towards his stronger late '70s period more influenced by magic realism and Borges. This version of "Love" is slightly rearranged from the Pyramid 1976 edition (also slightly rearranged from the original 1968 collection). For you completists out there 3 stories have been dropped (that appear in other books) and replaced by new ones, not always to the better and he has changed the opening and closing story to create a very different effect. Originally opening with ""Neither Your Jenny Or Mine" (a heavy, slightly autobiographical abortion/road story) and ending with "I Curse The Lesson," a somewhat frivolous meta-fiction that is light and influenced by his girlfriend at the time (Lori, I believe who subsequently disappeared), this new 1997 version buries "Jenny" halfway in the running order and places "Resurgence of Miss Ankle-Strap Wedgie," a long and strong but more conservative Hollywood story, originally in the middle, to the front and moves "I Curse" into the middle to end with "Punky & The Yale Men," which is a tough "get drunk and get laid"/road story like "Jenny," having the same harsh autobiographical effect that "Jenny" did at the beginning, but now ending the book. He's softened the opening in my opinion and made the closing more dark, an interesting switch that changes the entire effect of the book. I liked the original's rough desperate opening with its need to shock and shut us up. The light "Curse the Lesson" no longer has a privileged place (nor does the inspiration I guess), so I feel like the book is now hiding its lede as it were."Love" is one of my favorite Ellison books because so many of these stories have a truth and investigate relationships, sexual and otherwise, and aren't preoccupied with any fantastic or SF trapppings (which "Beast" predominantly is) and that I'm more familiar with in much of Ellison's writing.
The jacket flap sums up this book perfectly, 'Here are two big books in one volume. Each has the word "love" in the title. But don't let that get your hopes up. Yeah, these are stories that sing... but they also draw blood.' That's the core of this book, real love, not the pampered and idealistic stuff that preaches "love will conquer all." This is about love that hurts. This volume is divided into two books, I prefer the second, with all stories on the different kinds of love. My favorites are the two bookend stories that open and close this book. "The Beast That Shouted Love at the Heart of the World" is beautifully crafted and shows how good a short story can be. The last story in the collection, "A Boy and His Dog," is a great way to end the book and the collection. The first book in this volume, although not my favorite, is still very good, and contains stories that reach into different faucets of life, and show the love between people and their different lives. When Shakespeare saw love, he saw the kind that ends in a double suicide, Harlan Ellison hits pretty close to the same nail with this collection. Even though not every story in here is top notch, I still highly recomend this volume for a great look on real love, and for containing some of the best short stories Ellison has written.
I adore Ellison's works. However, I have most of them (more than the Columbus Metropolitan Library system) and do not like the fact that they are being reprinted 2 per volume. I would recommend this to anyone who already likes Ellison, but am unsure that it is good for a 1st intor to him.
The character interaction was incredible. The plot was multi-facited always suprising with each turn and twist.
