Drew is Proprietor of Nancy Victor Gallery and Director of Navig8 Ltd. His focus in this book is on working with clients to create high end print materials, however there is much for any designer to glean from his discussion of process. The book is delightfully written, with such advice as:"Always name your files properly and consistently.Use an intuitive folder structure.Test your system; if a complete stranger was to open your job folder, would they know which was the most up-to-date version?Mock people who do not have a system."Of interest to all designers (especially those who work with clients) are his chapters on creative process, working with clients, conceptual sketching, color, and typography. Of special interest to designers who work in print are chapters on paper, the printing process, and binding.

There's a time in every designer's life when they've amassed enough experience to "go pro." You know, when your work surpasses "nephew art" and can command real clients at respectable rates. It's at this moment you need to read this book. Too early and some concepts may go over your head, too far down the road and you'll say "I already knew this..."But for folks at that 2-3yr window, THIS BOOK IS LIKE GOLD. Concepts discussed are mature and time-tested, and de Soto will certainly help you run a better design business. In fact, I'd argue that even many experienced folks oughta read this one - our industry is riddled with bad design created by people who think they're above revisiting basics.I really like how he cuts right to the chase - "there are many ways to tackle [ABC], but if you do [XYZ] it's gonna work." That's real-world, applicable advice - the kind we're all starving for. It's really damn good.As a side - the actual design of this book is terrific. The cover doesn't really do it justice (although I dig that, too). Funny as it is, I was surprised the first time I cracked it open to find full-color images. It's beautiful and easy to read. I love holding it, thumbing through and feeling the pages. I especially like the elastic band that has helped me keep my place.Kudos to both the author (Drew de Soto) and the publisher (BIS Publishers) - this is a solid accomplishment and you should be proud of the work.

I was not as impressed with this version of Know Your Onions as I was with the web design version. De Soto's text is very engaging, but seems to meander through graphic design concepts, highlighting some and truncating others. For general graphic design concepts, it is perhaps a good book, but it might be tough for a novice designer to understand.

This book was funny, simply written and thorough on a variety of topics relating to graphic design. I'd recommend it for people interested in learning more before considering working in the field, or who are new to it. The author is a traditionalist, which is good to know before reading.

Content rich, this book is very practical and helpful in the matter of Graphic Design. Highly recommended for anyone wanting to get into the field. Bought this book while a Junior Graphic Design major in college, wish I would've found it sooner. A final note: the author is British, so don't be surprised by the colloquialisms. I actually find them quite amusing, but that's besides the point, haha.

This book has a lot of useful information and it is so easy to read. I feel like he is talking one on one with you. He tells you obvious things that you would have never thought about. The book is well made and every page is bursting with information to help you with your graphic design career. I recommend this book to anyone in the graphic design field.

Super useful and fun read! It had some great advice while still staying interesting with it's jokes here and there. I would recomend it to any designer.

It presents the results of the Parallel Distributed Processing (PDP) group's work in the early 1980s and provides a good overview of the earlier neural network research. The PDP approach (also known as connectionism among other things) is based on the conviction that various aspects of cognitive activity are thought of in terms of massively parallel processing. The first volume starts with the general framework and continues with an analysis of learning mechanisms and various mathematical and computational tools important in the analysis of neural networks. The chapter on backpropagation is written by Rumelhart, Hinton, and Williams, who codiscovered the algorithm in 1986. The second volume is written with a psychological and biological emphasis. It explores the relationship of PDP to various aspects of human cognition. The book is a comprehensive research survey of its time and most of the book's results and methods are still at the foundation of the neural network field.

Holy SH_ T What A Life and Recovery Miracle!And I can say this because I am also in recovery from addiction. And just when you think you have read or heard in a meeting the most devastating story? "A man in recovery" comes along and shares his testimony that gives all who read this book a clear picture of how addiction will destroy you and the best of everything you have built and worked hard for and drain you to the edge death and darkness as Tim eloquently written.I laughed, shed some tears, and his story made me "feel." Made me look back to my worst days of addiction. When written words make you feel what the author is sharing, then he did his job as a writer. The book is well laid out, exceptionally written and edited. Tim is very adamant about NEVER giving up or give in as your "Miracle" is coming and freedom from bondage in recovery.He shares very real, raw, and bares his soul and indiscretions with an "in your face attitude" as he should as he is talking life or death option when it comes to any addiction, including his own. But? Second chances are allowed! Sometimes having to be tough is a good thing to reclaim one's life back. I commend him for sharing his life and his recovery and what it took for him to be another life saved. God performs Miracles. Like Tim, we just need to listen and see them all around us. I began to read and figured I would finish it in a week at my leisure. I finished it non-stop! Tim tells it like it is from an addict's perspective, which is something most of us cannot relate to? Writing part of this book had to be painful in the fact that Tim had to relive difficult times in his life - but also had to be therapeutic in some way. As you will see Tim lost a son to the same addiction. Again something most of us absolutely cannot relate to?! In my opinion it is to some extent giving back and Tim is now able to pay it forward by what he does on a daily basis. And that is helping others in this sad and all too often common world of addiction that we read, hear and see about on a daily basis. This is an amazing story, he is an amazing man, and you will not be disappointed you bought this book!

Awesome book...Tim lays it all out there...just when you think you have heard and seen it all...TIM RYAN's journey is surreal...Thank you to his family for letting him tell the story, I know it must have been hard to relieve some of the trauma... Tim has done what God wants for all of us -- he has taken what he's been given, overcome it and is now telling others how he did it. Tim is tireless in his desire to help others and I really admire him.

Tim Ryan leaves nothing to your imagination in this journey of his life down the road of addiction. If you didn't know what it's like to be an addict, you will thru Tim ' s truthful story. But, have tissues handy, I cried thru every chapter. He's now in recovery and he let's us know why recovery and your higher powered is a road he will walk the rest of his life. 5 stars are not enough, nor would 500 be. A must read for families together.Tim Ryan has saved so many from the hell of heroin, but he's lost many and this is what fuels him. Watching a loved one detox from heroin is painful. Fighting for their rights in early detox is excruciating. There's not enuf thank yous for you Tim, nor blessings. Peace...

This is the least interesting book on addiction I've read in a long time.I'm sure there is a story but it's not in the book, even though the author overdosed and died multiple times - stories that are not in the book. What's in the book is the sucess story of water skiing and making a lot of money on multiple businesses, going to jail, getting clean and preaching god. Not worth the money!

I just finished reading this book. Wow! It is very well written and it really helped me understand the mindset of addict. Every chapter is very emotional. I believe this book will be a very helpful resource and tool for addicts in active addiction, people in recovery and anyone who has a family member or friend in addiction. Thank you Tim Ryan for sharing your life story.

I have read this book three times and am still enthralled. This is a must read from a man who doesn't sugar coat a thing. It should be a mandatory read for every high school student!!!
