It is estimated that one in three New York City residents is an immigrant. No other American city has a population composed of so many different nationalities. Of these "foreign born," a relatively small percentage come directly from Ireland, but the Irish presence in the city―and America―is ubiquitous. In the 1990 census, Irish ancestry was claimed by over half a million New Yorkers and by 44 million nationwide. The Irish presence in popular American culture has also been highly visible.

Yet for all the attention given to Irish Americans, surprisingly little has been said about post–World War II immigrants. Almeida’s research takes important steps toward understanding modern Irish immigration. Comparing 1950s Irish immigrants with the "New Irish" of the 1980s, Almeida provides insights into the evolution of the Irish American identity and addresses the role of the United States and Ireland in shaping it.

She finds, among other things, that social and economic progress in Ireland has heightened expectations for Irish immigrants. But at the same time they face greater challenges in gaining legal residence, a situation that has led the New Irish to reject many organizations that long supported previous generations of Irish immigrants in favor of new ones better-suited to their needs.

Linda Dowling Almeida, Adjunct Professor of History at New York University, has published articles on the "New Irish" in America and is a longtime member of the New York Irish History Roundtable. She also edited Volume 8 of the journal New York Irish History.

"Most histories of New York City's Irish immigrants focus on the plight of the men and women who fled the potato famine in the mid, 19th century. However, a recent US census recorded over half a million persons of Irish ancestry living in NYC; historians know very little about this generation of Irish immigrants. In an effort to address this overlooked aspect of the city's history, Almeida (New York Univ.) explores the Catholic Irish immigrants who made their way to the city in the 1950s and 1980s. She surveys the experiences and expectations of midcentury immigrants and examines why the New Irish were forced to adapt their expectations and institutions to meet the social and cultural demands of life in New York City. Based on 52 interviews with Irish immigrants and material drawn from the US census, this is a solid piece of scholarship. Almeida undermines notions that the city's Irish community is a homogeneous entity, while demonstrating that probing the forces that mold Irish identity is a rewarding exercise. About the Author

Linda Dowling Almeida is an Adjunct Professor of History at New York University. She received her BA and MA degrees from Boston College and her Ph.D. from NYU. About the Author
Michael S. Lewis-Beck is F. Wendell Miller Distinguished Professor of Political Science at the University of Iowa, and holds a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. His interests are comparative elections, election forecasting, political economy, and quantitative methodology. He has been designated the 4th most cited political scientist since 1940, in the field of methodology. Professor Lewis-Beck has authored or co-authored over 240 articles and books, including "Applied Regression: An Introduction", " Data Analysis: An Introduction, Economics and Elections: The Major Western Democracies, Forecasting Elections, The American Voter Revisited "and" French Presidential Elections". He has served as an Editor of the "American Journal of Political Science", the Sage "QASS" series (the green monographs) in quantitative methods and "The Sage Encyclopedia of Social Science Research Methods". Currently he is Associate Editor of "International Journal of Forecasting" and Associate Editor of "French Politics". In spring 2012, he held the position of Paul Lazersfeld University Professor at the University of Vienna. During the fall of 2012, he was Visiting Professor at Center for Citizenship and Democracy, University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium. In spring 2013, Professor Lewis-Beck was Visiting Scholar, Centennial Center, American Political Science Association, Washington, D.C. During fall 2013, he served as Visiting Professor, Faculty of Law and Political Science, Universidad Autonoma de Madrid, Spain. In spring, 2014, he was Visiting Scholar, Department of Political Science, University of Goteborg, Sweden. For fall, 2014, he served as a Visiting Professor at LUISS University, Rome. At present, he is co-authoring a book on how Latin Americans vote.

Norpoth holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Michigan. He has previously taught at the Universities of Texas, Arizona, and Cologne, Germany, as well as in the ECPR summer school on quantitative methods. He regularly assists the New York Times with its Election night analysis and has served as a polling analyst for the Foreign Policy Association.

William G. Jacoby is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Michigan State University. He is also a Research Scientist at the University of Michigan, where he serves as Director of the Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research (ICPSR) Summer Training Program in Quantitative Methods of Social Research.Professor Jacoby joined the MSU faculty in 2003. Previously, he held positions at the University of South Carolina, Ohio State University, and the University of Missouri. He received his Ph.D. from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 1983.Professor Jacoby's main professional interests are mass political behavior (public opinion, political attitudes, voting behavior) and quantitative methodology (measurement theory, scaling methods, statistical graphics, modern regression). His current research focuses on citizen ideology and belief system organization, value choices and their implications for subsequent political orientations, measuring policy priorities in the American states, the implications of measurement assumptions for statistical models, and graphical strategies for data analysis.Recently, Professor Jacoby has taught courses on public opinion, regression analysis, scaling methods, and statistical graphics.

I am a Professor in the Department of Political Science at Ohio State University. My research and teaching interests include voting behavior, legislative behavior, and research methods, with a focus on survey research methods and scaling techniques.

While Simka is away working long days as a cleaning woman, Bronka is left largely to her own resources. Emotionally resilient, Bronka manages to escape her nightmarish existence, ultimately finding fulfillment and happiness. But the surprising way she does so is a mystery revealed only at the end of this extraordinary tale. Ulitskaya's elegant prose, and her detailed descriptions of everyday life, makes "Bronka" an excellent literary text for students of Russian language, literature, and culture. This reader is intended for intermediate and advanced students of Russian. It presumes knowledge of basic vocabulary, and a generally good foundation in Russian grammar. That said, several steps have been taken to make this text accessible to as wide an audience as possible: participles and verbal adverbs are marked in the text with an asterisk (*) and are translated in an alphabetized list at the end of the story in the section Причастия и деепричастия: marginal glosses contain a generous number of vocabulary words and phrases that may be unfamiliar, or otherwise challenging to the student; footnotes provide translations of difficult sentences, commentaries on unusual grammatical constructions, or on aspects of Russian culture, and, where needed, historical background.
