The book starts with the basics, demystified: salt, fat, cooking, and quantity. Kenedy then covers dry vs. fresh, and provides recipes for several pastas and for three authentic sauces that form the foundation for many of the sauces in the book. From the obscure story of Strozzapreti ("priest stranglers") to the humorous warming red pepper and whiskey sauce for Radiatore pasta, or "radiators," one learns how shapes are created to maximize surface area and sauce delivery. The ingredients needed for over 200 sauce preparations run the gamut from obscure (Lumace alla Lumache, or Snails with Snails) to the near pedestrian, like Frankfurters and Fontina, a recommended pairing with the wheel shaped Rotelline, "a complex, arguably uninspired shape that was only possible with the advancement of the pasta industries mechanization," an advancement that was apparently "much lauded by the Fascists." This is a good history book and a GREAT cookbook. The premise is simple: the authors artistically cover a great variety of pasta shapes (in alphabetical order for easily finding the one you want) and give a short history of each shape and the region of Italy it comes from.More importantly, for the shapes that can easily be handmade, there are instructions on how to do so as well as at least one sauce or other plate including the pasta. The authors give suggestions for which sauces pair with which shapes and vice versa, allowing you to experiment with your favorite pasta shape or sauce type as you prefer.I've had experience making fresh pasta before, so I found the recipes easy to follow (and delicious!). If you've never made pasta before, you'll want to experiment with the more basic recipes first before tackling some of the complex recipes.Overall this book is a must have if you love pasta. There are a ton of recipes from all over Italy, spanning from soups and broths to lasagne and other main courses.As an added bonus, the book looks outstanding and can function as a coffee table piece when you're not using it to whip up a nice meal.

This book has a great design, a variety of Southern Italian recipes and serves as an interesting history lesson on pasta shapes. This is for the experienced cook to add to their library - anyone new in the kitchen would be intimidated. I'm going to give my copy to my mother, who has already a talented cook. I think I need to stick with the picture-book type of cookbook (think America's Test Kitchen).

I find this to be one of the most beautiful food related books that I own or have seen. As a few have noted, this is not for beginners or those who need photographs. Personally, I had no trouble with the lovely black & white pasta renderings. The pasta descriptions are spot on. The recipes are delicious and easy to follow.

Amazingly simple. Amazingly perfect. Amazing little tricks and techniques that raise your standard. Plus very beautiful.

Everything you need to know about pasta, sauce and cooking preparation. I am fairly good in the kitchen when it comes to cooking pasta, but this book reinvigorated my ideas of sauce (from fat to light versions). Also, it suggests pairing with beers and/or wines.It is a nice book to have in your kitchen.

About the Author

GIOVANNI CIVARDI was born in Milan in 1947. While training to become a sculptor, portrait artist and illustrator at the Free Life-Study School of the Accademia di Brera, he also studied medicine and surgery. For over a decade, he worked as an illustrator, producing commissions for newspapers, magazines and book covers. During frequent trips to France and Denmark, Civardi put on one-man exhibitions of this work and pursued his interest in studying the relationship between medical anatomy and the human form as depicted by the artist. His experience gained from teaching anatomy, life drawing and portraiture in schools and institutions over many years has led to the publication of numerous books in which Civardi's experiences are brought into focus.

This is one of my favourite books in my art studio. The drawings are simplified for better understanding but without being immature. I bought this a second time to give a fellow artist. I believe it is excellent for any level artist.

The book does a Great job I'm breaking down details and showing angles and proportions of the hands the shading definitely comes in handy and then it shows artwork previously done and what materials to make to do it as a great practice so happy I got this

Pretty decent for it's size which there was more examples in it though.

My granddaughter is a great drawer, but she has trouble drawing hands, so I bought the book for her. She is 13 and really loves the book. It will help her a lot. Thanks,

Note that this isn't a step-by-step book for beginners but it's a good reference of hands and feet with lots of sketches that may make drawing these complicated anatomical parts a little easier. It's great for the price but I wish there were some photos to reference and it's a pretty thin book that could have had more in it.

Present for my daughter. She found very helpful and it will be a great reference in the future.

This book is one of the better ones I've seen on hands and feet. Especially feet. Many, many poses that give any pro artist an excellent visual aid. It's a book you should have in your studio. This would also be a very valuable book for an art teacher, and I'd highly recommend it for a high schooler who wants to better their drawing skills.

Not easy to find what I wanted in a drawing manual. The positions and the actions are very good for copying until your hand and eye get the gist of representing hands and feet. I thoroughly recommend this book.
